Survey Assistant

This is a full time position based in Calgary. Our typical operations are from Monday to Friday with work in Calgary and surrounding areas.

The Survey Assistant position reports directly to the Survey Crew Chief and indirectly to the Project Manager.

The Survey Assistant will use the survey rod and prism for collecting survey data and also for placing new points at calculated locations. This position also assists the Survey Crew Chief by carrying survey equipment and supplies from the truck to the site.

While the Survey Assistant (Level 1) may not be able to perform all tasks listed immediately upon employment, it is expected that the individual will learn to perform these tasks within the first couple of weeks and continuously improve from that point forward.

The responsibilities of the Survey Assistant are as follows:

  • Fluent in English.
  • Strong team player: willing to take direction from others.
  • Work outdoors in all conditions.
  • Able to setup a survey tribrach over a point.
  • Able to work shifts ranging from 8 to 12 hours.
  • Monitor supplies in the truck and notify the Survey Crew Chief when additional supplies are required.
  • Maintain a clean work environment, including the general cleanliness of the work vehicles.
  • Use caution and care to ensure that all survey equipment is kept in excellent condition. Any issue with the quality or condition of equipment is to be reported to the Survey Crew Chief immediately.
  • Physically fit and able to perform tasks such as (but not limited to):
    • Able to lift loads up to 50 lbs.
    • Place up to 40 survey monuments in a day that are 90 cm long using an 8 lb sledgehammer.
    • Dig holes using a shovel, pick ax, or breaker bar in varying conditions including rocky surfaces and frozen terrain for depths up to and possibly exceeding 1 metre.
    • Use a jackhammer for digging, placing survey monuments, or drilling holes for extended periods.
    • Walk long distances, carrying equipment and supplies over varying terrain (urban, construction, forest, pasture, slopes, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of distances in the metric system (ability to move a given distance when staking points).
  • Work in accordance with the company Health and Safety Policy and Procedures Manual.
